Ashley Finnigan has been the head of the Burton Roofing branch in Irvine since this year. During her 14 years with the company, Ashley has worked as a Sales Assistant and Assistant Branch Manager, and now is responsible for leading and overseeing its daily operations.
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
It’s a day to encourage girls and women to follow their ambitions and be strong, in an industry that are majority male lead roles. It’s also a day to encourage everyone to treat each other with respect. I feel it’s a day to celebrate strength, courage and the contributions women bring to the roofing industry.
How has the situation of women evolved in your industry and during your professional career?
Since joining the company 15 years ago as the only female working in our branch, we now have 4 females in total. This shows the company is recognising the value of diversity and inclusion. My own personal role has seen me progress from Sales Assistant, to Assistant Branch Manager and the most exciting role of taking on the Branch Manager role this year. Roofing has traditionally been seen as a male dominated field, but my own progression shows this is changing.
Have you had any difficulties in your professional life because you are a woman?
Throughout my career there has been many difficulties being a young woman. The most difficult is dealing with bias and being treated differently because of my gender. In my own branch we are lucky things are changing, and lot of our male customers accept our gender and have respect and appreciate our knowledge.
What do you think your biggest contribution to Burton has been?
I have built and lead a great team. We located to a flagship branch last year, that is now thriving. I am successfully achieving goals and targets. I have made some lovely working relationships with my colleagues in various roles and departments.
Why would you recommend being part of the Cupa Group team to other women?
At Burton Roofing, no matter your gender, you are treated the same by everyone. I love my job and would encourage any female looking for a challenge to look at joining the company.
