Cupa Group has today announced the acquisition of the Samaca group, a company that specialises in the extraction, manufacturing and sale of slate, based in O Trigal, in Carballeda de Valdeorras, Orense, Spain. With this operation, Cupa Group strengthens its leading position as the biggest producer of slate for roofs and façades on a global scale.

Established in 1968, the Samaca group has 300 employees and is formed by the companies Pizarras Samaca, a trader company, and Irosa and Pizarras Gonta, two production companies that operate five quarries and seven processing plants, located in the towns of O Trigal and Portela, in Carballeda de Valdeorras, Galicia, and La Baña, in the district of La Cabrera in León, Spain. These assets are incorporated into Cupa Group to increase its production and sales capacity around the world. Samaca’s position as a key player on the international slate market is notable in several countries, with France, United Kingdom, Benelux and the United States being the main countries it exports to.

Growth strategy

Samaca recorded a turnover of 30 million euros in 2023. Its acquisition reactivates Cupa Group’s inorganic growth after it incorporated Pizarras Gallegas, Proinor, Lomba and Rinus Roofing in 2021, and it means that Cupa Group now manages 79 subsidiaries, 30 quarries, 40 processing plants, 70 distribution centres and 2,800 employees with presence in nine countries, which generated a consolidated turnover of 465 million euros in 2023. The company, propelled by the acquisition of Samaca Irosa, predicts that it will reach 500 million euros in 2025.

Javier Fernández, CEO of Cupa Group, describes the operation as “an investment that will increase our production capacity and expand our presence in the markets we operate in, to strengthen our leading position. This acquisition, the largest in the group’s history, economically and strategically speaking, demonstrates our absolute confidence in the future of the slate sector, which has a high growth potential if we continue investing in its modernisation and development, promoting a model of sustainable business, which is generating a lot of quality stable employment, and significantly contributing to the socioeconomic development of our region, which is primarily rural”.
